So i herd u leik Star Trekz

So I got to see the new Trek movie on Sunday. First time I've ever gotten to watch a Trek movie in the theatre (something I didn't think I'd have the chance to do after the dismal failure of "Nemesis"), and I gotta say it was pretty cool.

The good:

-Casting: The actors seem to know they were filling some really big shoes. I heard the guy that plays Spock practiced for weeks to perform the Vulcan salute and to be able to raise his eyebrow (which only happens in one, really brief scene). And it shows in all their scenes.

-Trek references: These weren't the "bash you over the head with a 2 x 4" variety that Manny Coto shoehorned into Enterprise's last season. They were subtle nobs that fans could enjoy and say "Ah, I get it," and that new folks wouldn't be distracted by. (Christorpher Pike in the wheelchair at the end, as one example.) Yes, there is one about the poor redshirt getting killed, and I can't believe it took me ten minutes to realize it *holds head down in shame*

-Spock/Uhura: Well, that is....different. But a good different. And honestly, with Trek's batting average as far as romance goes, I couldn't bitch too hard if I wanted to.

-ACTION! OMFG, the action scenes just kick ass. Makes me sad I don't have a Blu-ray player.

-Small nitpick, but there's one scene where they have trouble locking onto Kirk and Sulu free-falling in the transporter room. Chekov runs to save the day here, but I just realized how for the most part how clean transporting usually is in Trek no matter the situation (Enterprise being an exception, because...well, the tech is new. One of the few things it got right, but I digress), and I'm glad we got to see it not be perfect.

-Leonard Nimoy appears! Does that need any more explaination than that?!

-LULZ. And I mean, there are so many scenes where I'm laughing my ass off. The problem with TNG movies is that they take themselves way too seriously or, in the rare attempt to be funny, they try way too hard. Data telling Worf a boob joke?! My sense of humor goes into the gutter quite often, and that made me cringe.

No, but the funny stuff in here was pretty cool.

The not-so-great:

-Chekov's accent: Okay, seriously, does it need to be that thick in the 21st century? We get it, he's Russian.

-The bridge design: I didn't mind in the commericlas, but all that white and no color...OUCH, my poor eyes. The viewscreen that doesn't obstruct the view outside the ship was a nice touch, though.

-Krik becoming Captain: I promised myself I wouldn't whine about this plot point, buuuuuuuuuuut...aSDFGHJKL. And of a brand new ship, no less? I guess they have to set it up like that so we can get to the action in the sequel that, looking at the sales for this movie, is most likely a given.

Stuff I should mention:

Nero's cries of "SPOOOOOOOOOOOCCCCCCCCCKKK!" has shades of Kirk's infmous cry of "KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHN!" I don't know if the writers did this intentionally or not, but LOL CHEESE.

Overall, it's a nice little popcorn action flick that is fun, I recommend everyone go see it, even if you're not a Trek fan

Also, I ship Kirk/Spock now, kthnxsbye.

(I hope someone replies to this post, cuz I really loves discussion me some Trek!)

Oh, really? I was really only ever interested in TOS and some TNG. Maybe someday I'll check out DS9. XD

What do you think of Byakuya/Rukia? XD It's one of my favorites, but I know a lot of people have a problem with the concept. And Hiyori/Urahara is win, though I don't know if I've ever seen any/much fic with it. *giggles* And you already have a pairing list for the contest? *fears*

Hee hee. Every time I see a bad ByaRuki fic, I'm reminded of that soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful," which retconned one character's paternity and the guy starts getting the hots for his not!sister, who was once believed to be his daughter! A daughter he help to deliver, no less.

Granted, Byakuya and Rukia didn't grow up as siblings, so that makes it a bit more easy to stomach--it's not my favorite couple, nor will I ever read anything above a pg-13 rating for it, but I still hate when fans squee about the pairing because "OMG She looks like Hisana, so they should be together!!111!!one" I mean...really? I even made a semi rant about that last year. (http://kari-izumi.livejournal.com/4093.html#cutid1)

I don't have a list set in stone. I have one pairing that I know for sure's gonna be on that list, but the problem I have is sitting down and dedicating time to promote the contest and look around to see which pairings are popular/really disliked. I work five days a week and I haven't had two days off in a row since before Christmas. I finally do have a two-day weekend coming up on Sunday, so I'll have to sit down then before the people I do have signed up lose interest. 8D

I forgot about this fic

I bookedmarks this with the intention of snarking it on badfic_quotes. You gotta love how Byakuya does his best imitation of the average rap star as he's lusting after his sister XD

The title is appropriate, for sure. XD (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5006513/1/The_Most_Perverted_and_Horny_Captain_Ever)
