To be honest, the first time I watched that episode of her backstory in the anime, it looked like Rukia had the bigger crush on his wife.
Haha same! She wasn't all that dismayed at the whole situation until they both died, so I always felt like she just really admired the couple as the type of people she wish she was; and Kaien also conviently provided what she doesn't have from Byakuya. I don't deny that there might be a small crush, only that it is a lot more complicated than unrequited romantic attraction for Kaien alone (in which case I think she'd shown a little more tension when talking about the wife). Also I feel like her feelings for the them is magnified by the tragedy that followed and her involvement in it. What you described in the fic is just right.
The Byakuya/Yuzu one makes me giggle because of the irony. Revenage is a b*tch, Ichigo. XD
